Newborn Health: Bonding & Emotional Support

Did you know that the way you care for your newborn baby emotionally can help enhance their development?  Emotional support and bonding are essential for a baby's growth and development, and can have lasting effects throughout their life.  In this blog post, we will explore a few ways on how to create a nurturing environment that promotes a solid bond and emotional well-being needed from a mother to provide a strong foundation for the baby's future progress.

Skin – to – Skin Contact, referred to as kangaroo care, is incredibly important for strengthening the emotional bond between the parent and baby, fostering a sense of security and love.  Right after childbirth, you can help to regulate your baby’s body temperature, heart rate, and stress levels by holding the baby against your skin.  Fathers can also encourage a deep emotional connection with their baby by boding with their baby skin – to- skin.

Gentle touch and massage can help calm the baby down, soothe, and comfort the baby by promoting relaxation and bonding.  It helps to strengthen the bond between the baby and the parent creating a sense of security and trust. It can relieve the baby of minor pains or discomfort they may experience from getting vaccinated or teething.  Touch and massage stimulate the baby's senses, which can aid in cognitive development and sensory integration. It can also improve the baby's circulation, muscle tone, and flexibility.  Colic and gas can be relieved and improved digestion can be achieved by massaging the baby's belly.  By stimulating the nervous system, touch and massage can improve general health and brain development

The emotional health of a mother affects her ability to give reliable, loving, and affectionate care to her baby. An environment of security can be established for the infant by their mother who is steady, calm, and composed.  Taking care of your own physical and emotional health will allow you to provide better care and support to your baby. It is important to reduce your stress level, as this can lead to potential issues with breastfeeding, difficulty sleeping, and heightened irritability with both mother and baby. Adequate sleep, maintaining healthy nutrition, and self-care are a few ways to enable mothers to have the energy and stamina needed for the demands of parenting.  When mothers are well-rested and emotionally balanced, they are more responsive to their baby's needs, which nurtures secure attachment and supports the baby's emotional and psychological development.

Remember, the best way to care for your baby is to take care of yourself. Here are a few self-care key suggestions to use to maintain your emotional health as a new mother:

·       Try to sleep while your baby sleeps.  Ask and accept help from your support system. Take advantage of quick naps.

  1. ·       Keep healthy snacks on hand for quick energy boosts.
  2. ·       Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day.
  3. ·       Go out for a walk with your baby or do some light exercises at home.  Stretching helps.
  4. ·       Take a break by relaxing in your tub, reading a book, or enjoy some music.

I hope this blog reading encouraged you to bond and emotionally support your baby as well as yourself.
